Discuss what worked well and could be developed further? What were the challenges and how might you address these going forwards? Thinking back to the very beginning of this project, review your processes to generate your own ‘drawing with charcoal verb list.
My experience with charcoal very much became a balance of opposites. Maybe inspired by the dramatic tonal qualities that can be achieved. Erasing to the papers lightest tone against the dense layering of black. And continuing to use that theme with how I explored line, pressure, realism and abstraction, etc.
I would like to develop the use of geology in a piece, how the history of a drawing can bring more content to the work. To keep evolving the use of academic marks to map a composition out, but then inject abstract marks to give a sense of freedom to the work. And release it from the conformity of realism.
Before this project I never liked using charcoal. I guess I was afraid of its turbulent nature. The preliminary exercises helped me become more at one with the medium, and then it became super interesting. It would almost take over and direct the drawing without my intention. I had to rethink my part of the process, and I found that understanding the subject and using observation were my roles. Then when I put the charcoal to the paper the marks came in-spite of me. It’s a liberating way of reproducing a subject.
