Use an extended drawing tool to make a drawing of the objects. This time experimenting with the reduction of control that you have with the charcoal.
Fig.1 Flockhart K, Reduced Control 2 (2023)
On using charcoal at the end of a metre long cane.
If the line was slow and considered it looked dead.
If it was spontaneous and a risk, it became alive.
Pressure control needed a different approach. It couldn’t be applied with force, more so that I needed to change my grip to change the line density.
There is a tempo to the marks. Short marks are easy, controllable. But longer marks needed me to move my whole body.
I hinged my wrist, rotated my arm, and even side stepped and swayed behind the easel to direct the charcoal.
My relationship with the subject became more intuitive.
Being stood further away from the paper and the objects made it easier to compose. And reduced the anxiety of mapping out the composition.
