Spend some time exploring the links provided, and make some notes on your initial thoughts about the relationships between 2D and 3D drawing.
Previously I theorised very clear boundaries between disciplines. It wasn’t until I created work for the ‘Drawing with Scissors’ exercise that the divisions began to merge.
I chose to use fairly thick cardboard for my pieces so the work instantly had a sculptural feel to it, and I also began to to experiment with the textural qualities of the cardboard to narrate the textures of my subject. That was my first realisation that although I was approaching my subject sculpturally – ie with a 3D notion – I was still applying the same observational and practical skills that I would use when drawing traditionally. For example, form, line, light, shadow, negative space, etc…..
As the work progressed through the project my initial 2D style took on more 3 Dimensional elements, in a bid to increase the depth and surface texture of my drawing concepts.
Combined with this brief investigation of the exhibition Drawing : Sculpture I have discovered a foundation of understanding. I see evidence that you can draw with 3D materials, and use the sculptural elements of your support and materials to interconnect drawing and sculpture. But, I think that there needs to be a visual context. Without that it is very hard to navigate and can appear very abstract. I found the comments concerning this relevant in the latter half of the review by Ariane Belisle…….She notes that context was (deliberately?) substituted for sensory experience. Personally I would prefer to add some direction to such an exhibition, it doesn’t have to dictate, it can subtly direct the viewer to open up to the possibilities of a 3D drawing experience.
Using 3D practices to increase the agency of your work can certainly widen the goal posts for the artist and audience. Something that I explored in Project 2, and Im now further utilising in Project 3.
