Aim: I wanted to utilise the progress I have made so far and create a landscape drawing in paint.
Although my mark making is loose, I was as measured in my observation and precision. Some of the brushstrokes were quick, but one thing I have learnt is that I don’t have to be constantly fast and spontaneous to produce this style of work. To get the application of paint I require in a mark, the brushstroke can also be slow and thoughtful. This in turn creates a tempo change in the composition and adds interest to the artwork.
I searched to find the bare minimum of marks to express the view. Leaving negative space to inform not just an area of snow, but also the place of foreground. This is something also used on maps, the contour lines, continuous lines close together equal steeper areas, and increased space means flatter areas at the bottom of the mountain or valley.
Also the types of marks I make are significant to the depth and scale of the vista.
